The old Atlas F site near Brainard and David City is one of those Cold War places that hides in plain sight: a farmstead landscape, agricultural buildings, and a quiet Butler County road sitting over a former nuclear-missile complex that once held an intercontinental ballistic missile in a hardened underground silo. During the early 1960s, this was Atlas F Site 551-12, one of twelve Atlas F launch facilities operated by the 551st Strategic Missile Squadron from Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Atlas F Site 551-12 was an SM-65F Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile launch complex assigned to the 551st Strategic Missile Squadron, Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska. The squadron was ultimately assigned to the 98th Strategic Aerospace Wing. The site's Air Force operational site number was 12. Because this was an Atlas F vertical-silo launch complex, it had its own launch-control and support facilities at the complex rather than a Minuteman-style remote parent Launch Control Center.
Site 551-12 was built as part of the Lincoln AFB Atlas F missile field. The 551st Strategic Missile Squadron became operational in 1962. Site 551-12 was decommissioned on 1965-03-25. The 551st SMS itself was inactivated on 1965-06-25, after the Atlas F weapon system was removed from SAC operational service.
The site is no longer an active missile facility. It is decommissioned, privately owned agricultural property, and the Lincoln AFB Legacy Project identifies its present use as a hog farm. The site is not open to the public.
The visible landscape has changed from the early 1960s missile configuration. Historic and present-day satellite imagery shows the former launch complex area integrated into agricultural use, with farm buildings, open concrete areas, and surface features that no longer read as an active military facility to a casual observer. The Lincoln AFB Legacy Project's Site 12 photo page identifies a hog-farm use and includes photographs of the site area, including surface concrete, an apparent former or surviving Quonset-type structure, and a nearby commercial building.
As an Atlas F launch complex, the original military site would have included the vertical silo-launcher, launch-control and power spaces, entry and access structures, communications equipment, security fencing, access roads, fuel and oxidizer support systems, and surface support areas. Atlas F differed from earlier Atlas D and E launch facilities by storing the missile vertically underground in a hardened silo. The missile sat on an elevator/lift system and, when a launch sequence required it, would be raised to the surface before launch.
Atlas F was the final operational version of the Atlas ICBM. Compared with Atlas D and E, the Atlas F launch concept emphasized hardening and survivability. Instead of a gantry launcher or semi-hardened horizontal coffin launcher, the Atlas F missile was stored vertically in a hardened underground silo. The 551st SMS sites around Lincoln represented this last Atlas deployment pattern: twelve independent launch complexes, each holding one missile, spread across eastern Nebraska.
The system was still a first-generation ICBM. Atlas F used liquid propellants: RP-1 kerosene fuel and liquid oxygen oxidizer. RP-1 could remain aboard the missile while on alert, but liquid oxygen was cryogenic and had to be loaded late in the launch sequence. This made Atlas F more responsive than some earlier Atlas configurations, but far less rapid and less inherently survivable than later solid-fueled Minuteman missiles that could launch directly from the silo.
During periods such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, sources sometimes describe Atlas units as being placed in a high alert or launch-ready posture. For Atlas F, that did not mean the missile was continuously raised out of the silo or continuously loaded with liquid oxygen. It meant that the site and crew were brought to a heightened readiness condition: the missile remained vertically stored in the silo with RP-1 aboard, launch crews and support systems were prepared, liquid oxygen availability and loading readiness became critical, and the site was postured to begin the launch sequence quickly if ordered. The actual launch sequence still required opening the silo doors, raising the missile, loading liquid oxygen, topping off as needed, and completing final countdown actions.
The 551st SMS reached operational status in 1962. A USAF unit-history PDF, citing Air Force Historical Research Agency material, lists the 551st as turned over to SAC on 1962-09-15 and operational on the same date. Site 551-12's later assigned missile, Atlas 107F, was accepted on 1962-10-30 and delivered on 1962-10-31s. Atlas 107F replaced Atlas 48F as the operational ICBM for Site 12 after Atlas 48F was damaged and sent to San Bernardino Air Materiel Area for repair.
The missile assigned to Site 551-12 was Atlas 107F, General Dynamics serial number 62-12143, Air Force tail number 143. Atlas 107F replaced Atlas 48F as the operational ICBM for Site 12. Atlas 48F, serial number 61-2534 and Air Force tail number 534, was damaged and sent to SBAMA for repair; it was not launched and was eventually salvaged as scrap.
Public sources identify the Atlas E/F reentry vehicle as the Avco Mark 4. The National Air and Space Museum describes the Mark 4 RV as used on Titan I and Atlas E/F ICBMs in the early 1960s and states that it carried a W-38 nuclear warhead with a yield of about 3.75 megatons.
Operationally, the Atlas F site was not a simple empty tube with a missile inside. It was a crewed and maintained launch complex. The Lincoln AFB unit history describes the Atlas F crews as five-person missile crews working at the site, with personnel roles including missile combat crew commander, deputy missile combat crew commander, ballistic missile analysis technician, missile facility technician, and electric power production technician. It also describes guards remaining on the surface to protect the site. This was different from later Minuteman launch facilities, where the individual silo was normally unmanned and remotely monitored from a separate launch control center.
The site was part of a twelve-missile field. Each launch complex held one Atlas F, and the sites collectively gave the 551st SMS a dispersed nuclear-deterrent posture across eastern Nebraska. The squadron's support base at Lincoln AFB provided maintenance, missile handling, logistics, training, administration, and command support. The Lincoln AFB unit history notes that the squadron used Building 310, the Missile Assembly and Maintenance Shop, for missile maintenance and crew operations, and that crews were briefed before going to their sites.
During the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, the 551st SMS was among the Atlas F units brought to a heightened alert posture. All operational 551st sites were at a high level of alert and ready to launch if necessary. Because Site 551-12's replacement missile 107F was accepted and delivered at the end of October 1962, the exact configuration of Site 12 during each day of the crisis must be treated carefully; the squadron-level alert posture is clear, but the site-specific missile handover date shows that Site 12's final assigned missile entered the system at the end of that month.
The daily operational work at Site 551-12 would have centered on alert monitoring, crew readiness, security, liquid-fuel safety, equipment testing, communications reliability, maintenance dispatches, and periodic inspections. Atlas F was a dangerous and maintenance-heavy system. Its thin stainless-steel airframe required internal pressure, its propellant system involved RP-1 and liquid oxygen, and its underground launch complex contained specialized power, environmental, and mechanical equipment. The crew had to understand both nuclear-alert procedures and the practical hazards of working around a first-generation liquid-fueled missile.
The assigned missile also had a notable later career. Atlas 107F, the Site 12 missile, was shipped to Norton Air Force Base storage after its ICBM service and later launched from Vandenberg AFB on 1968-04-06. The launch location was Vandenberg AFB Gantry A-2, the payload as a technology test involving OV1-13 and OV1-14, and the outcome as successful. 107F was the first Atlas F type missile launched from the Vandenberg AFB A-2 Gantry Complex.
This later launch is important because it connects the site to the broader second life of retired Atlas E/F missiles. After the Atlas F left the nuclear-alert mission, some missiles were scrapped, but others were reused for research, military space, navigation, and technology missions. Site 551-12's missile was one of the missiles that made that transition from nuclear-deterrent hardware to a space and research launch vehicle.
The 551st SMS had a central role in the final Atlas F phaseout. A USAF unit-history states that the last Series F Atlas ICBMs were removed from alert at the 551st SMS on 1965-04-12, completing the operational phaseout of the Atlas F weapon system. It also states that the last Series F Atlas ICBM, described as the last Atlas and the last first-generation liquid-fuel ICBM to leave a SAC operational base, was shipped from the 551st SMS at Lincoln AFB to storage for future use as a launch vehicle on 1965-04-20. Headquarters SAC inactivated the 551st SMS and the remaining Atlas ICBM squadrons on 1965-06-25.
For Site 551-12 specifically, the missile did not disappear into scrap after decommissioning. Atlas 107F was accepted into post-service storage and later launched from Vandenberg on 1968-04-06. The site itself was stripped during the 1965-1966 showcase deactivation and salvage effort described by the Lincoln AFB Legacy Project. That process helps explain why the site became a practical example of how the Air Force could remove equipment and dispose of or repurpose former first-generation launch complexes.
The environmental record also survived the military mission. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' 2015 Nebraska FUDS inventory lists LINCOLN AFB AF FAC S-12 at David City, Butler County, as FUDS property number B07NE0633, Site 01, category HTRW. A GAO Formerly Used Defense Sites table lists LINCOLN AFB AF FAC S-12 / B07NE0633 in Butler County with Site 01 HTRW, high priority, Complete-RI/FS, with dates 1992 and 1999. ProPublica's DERP-derived Nebraska table lists LINCOLN AFB AF FAC S-12 at David City, Butler County, as Response Complete. These records indicate hazardous, toxic, or radioactive waste program tracking.
The site should be treated as private property with no public access. It is also a former missile and environmental-response site, so it should not be entered without permission.
